Chilando Chitangala: Lusaka’s Trailblazing Mayor
Chilando Chitangala made history as Lusaka’s first female mayor when she was elected in August 2021, breaking through barriers and setting an example for women in leadership. A member of Zambia’s Patriotic Front (PF) party, she took the helm during a time when Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia, faced significant challenges related to urban growth, infrastructure development, and municipal services.
Early Life and Career
Chitangala’s leadership roots are firmly grounded in community engagement and service. Prior to becoming mayor, she served as a Councilor for Roma Ward 17 in Lusaka. Her tenure as councilor was marked by her hands-on approach to solving local issues, such as road maintenance, waste management, and community welfare. Her ability to connect with residents and understand their needs on a ground level established her as a capable and empathetic leader.
Her background also includes professional experiences that have shaped her political vision. With a degree in Public Administration, she has a deep understanding of governance and urban management, which she uses to address the myriad issues that arise in a fast-growing city like Lusaka.
Vision for Lusaka
As Mayor, Chitangala’s mission is to turn Lusaka into a modern, clean, and sustainable city. Her agenda focuses on key areas:
- Infrastructure Development – Under her leadership, Lusaka has focused on improving roads, drainage systems, and public transportation. The goal is to alleviate the city’s persistent traffic and flooding issues.
- Waste Management – Waste disposal and cleanliness are among her top priorities. She has introduced various initiatives to enhance the city’s waste management systems, encouraging recycling and public participation in keeping the city clean.
- Health and Sanitation – Mayor Chitangala is committed to improving access to clean water and sanitation in informal settlements around Lusaka. Her policies align with promoting public health, especially in light of challenges like cholera outbreaks in the past.
- Youth and Women Empowerment – A strong advocate for gender equality and youth development, she has championed programs to support female entrepreneurs and provide more opportunities for young people in Lusaka.
- Climate Resilience and Sustainability – In addressing climate change, Chitangala’s administration has begun laying the groundwork for Lusaka to become more resilient by promoting urban tree planting and encouraging sustainable building practices.
Achievements and Challenges
Since assuming office, Chitangala has overseen several infrastructural projects and initiated reforms aimed at modernizing municipal services. However, like many leaders in developing urban centers, she faces challenges such as balancing rapid urbanization with environmental concerns, financial constraints, and political opposition.
Despite these hurdles, Chitangala has earned respect from both the public and private sectors for her determination to make Lusaka a better place to live and work. Her work has inspired many young women across Zambia to aspire to leadership positions, proving that gender should not be a barrier to achieving one’s goals.
A Future of Growth and Opportunity
Chilando Chitangala’s journey as Lusaka’s mayor is still unfolding, but her vision for a vibrant, inclusive, and progressive city continues to drive her forward. Her leadership style, characterized by community involvement and strategic planning, suggests that Lusaka is poised for significant growth under her stewardship.
With her at the helm, Lusaka has the potential to not only become a model city for Zambia but also to stand as a beacon for urban development across Africa.
